Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand

I believe in the power of vision, what I see in my mind's eye can be materialized. I can share in your vision or inspire you to see mine.  We can work as a team to create amazing solutions to complex challenges.

Path to Freelance/Contracting

In 2007 I was fortunate to be hired by ISL Engineering and Land Services where I matured from a Civil Engineering Technologist into a GIS Analyst/Developer.  In this very supportive environment, I was given gifts of education and experience. For this I returned creative solutions for analysis, automated mapping, data conversions and other geo-spatial problems.  I pioneered the use of Map3D and laid the ground work for a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) department.  I loved working in transportation because I felt as though I was a part of building my city. Later working in the GIS department, I enjoyed designing systems to automate the data needs and deliverables for project.  Presently, I have been working with clients to develop solutions to streamline large scale projects.

In the wake of the COVID-19 quarantine the needs of my family increased and I identified the need for flexibility.  It was with this understanding the decision was made to move away from traditional employment and offer my skills to a wide range of clients.  This shift in strategy has exposed me to new areas where my services can be utilized.  Now I  have the reach to serve more companies across different industries and I continue to do what I love best, use GIS to find solutions to interesting problems.

Foundations of GIS

Early exposure to GIS opened my mind up a world of possibilities.  After years of self learning I attended the ESRI User Conference 2015 and recognized the need for more in-depth knowledge in this area. I acted immediately to pursue a Bachelors of Applied Technology Degree in GIS through SAIT Polytechnic (online while I continued to work for ISL).  Within two weeks of deciding on my new path I obtained funding, was accepted by SAIT and began my first semester. In 2019 I completed the program with honours.

My unique education experience has giving me a strong edge opposed to a more traditional approach. As I learned new methods and technologies, I had the opportunity to apply them into real world solutions immediately rather than post-graduation.  This integrated learning gave me a depth of experience that would have been unavailable otherwise.

By exploring the boundaries of multiple software platforms, I have leveraged the strengths of each. Bridging the gaps between AutoCAD, Synchro and ArcGIS I have created interoperability workflows to increase information availability and improve the flow of design. In addition to this technical bridge, I can also interpret between the GIS and civil engineering jargon.  This creates a dynamic environment where communication is clear and professionals can collaborate with ease to discover creative workflows rather than struggle with translation.

I am open to provide GIS support for a wide range of projects and business needs.  I envision a team excited to utilize new technology rather than be threatened by it.  I believe GIS is the backbone to support this vision and with the right team, I have the right mind to manifest it.
